January is National Bath Safety Month. To celebrate, National Incontinence, a major supplier of incontinence products, provides tips on how families, especially those with elderly adults or individuals with disabilities, can make simple adjustments to create a safer bathroom.

More than 200,000 people experience a bathroom-related injury each year, according to the National Safety Council. So in recognition of National Bath Safety Month, National Incontinence, a leading distributor of incontinence supplies, is providing tips on how to practice bathroom safety.

“With slippery floors and hard surfaces, the bathroom poses many dangerous risks for the whole family, especially those with elderly adults, children, and individuals with disabilities,” said Renee Mercer, president of National Incontinence.

Falling is a big concern when it comes to bathroom safety. Installing grab bars in the shower or tub, and by the toilet, will prevent individuals from grabbing onto the towel rack or soap dish, which are not stable enough to hold a person’s weight. Bath mats with non-slip backings and sticky tub decals also reduce the risk of dangerous falls.

Another way to prevent slips and falls is to make adjustments to the toilet, says Mercer. Adjust the toilet’s height with a toilet riser to help those who have difficulty sitting down and getting up. Some elevated toilet seats even come with removable arms for added stability.

Other bathroom safety precautions include providing proper lighting, wiping up wet surfaces, steering electrical appliances and outlets away from water.

“Even taking simple precautions, like putting a nightlight in the bathroom, will increase bathroom safety,” Mercer said.
