Homeless across Texas surveyed Thursday

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - It's called the Point in Time Survey. Now across Texas, health and social professionals are surveying homeless people or those who've been homeless in the past year to try and find a better way to serve the homeless population.

For three years, Polly Dugdale curbed work hours to care for her mother. But after Dugdale's mother died, she stopped taking her mental health meds, all while battling debt problems and grief.

Not long ago, Dugdale was like many of the men and women at Newgate Mission, but today, she has a permanent home and is president of the Homeless Advisory Network in Longview.

Thirty-six-year-old Miriam Jones is one of dozens of people who took the homeless survey, as they waited for Newgate's free spaghetti lunch.

"They just asked me if I was being taken care of, if I had any goals and if I was able to attain those goals, and I'm fine. I'm being taken care of very well," Jones said.

The information gained from Thursday's Point in Time survey will be sent to Texas Homeless Coalition in Austin, where they will put the information together, compile it and try to suggest ways to help the Texas Legislature better fund grants and other programs that serve homeless in Texas for the coming years.
