Arp says goodbye to two veteran firefighters

Posted: Updated:

ARP (KYTX) - The Arp Volunteer Fire Department has had to say goodbye to two veteran firefighters this week.

The two men who passed away of natural causes, are being remembered by a community who loves and misses them.

"It's really tough because we are a brotherhood," says Arp Fire Marshal Marilynn Wilson.

Wilson has been a part of that brotherhood since 1986 - about 20 to 30 years after Joe Mullican and Richard Arnold joined.

"It's hard because you lose part of your founding roots. Both of these guys were the founders of this department. They basically brought people up and trained them from puppies and made them fighters that they are!" Wilson said.

Joe Mullican, who joined the department in 1956, died on Monday at 75-years-old.

Richard Arnold died Tuesday at 77. He'd been an Arp firefighter since 1968, serving as fire marshal, assistant fire chief, and president of the board.

Wilson says both men were like family to her.

"Richard's my neighbor and Joe was just part of the town," she said. "Both of them were good towns people as well as firefighters."

She calls Richard a father figure, "He was not only a firefighter and a disciplinarian but he was also a good neighbor to have."

She calls Joe hardworking, and kind hearted. "He was an active firefighter for a number of years and then it got to the point when he couldn't, he would bring us supplies. He would show up and offer the victim comfort."

She says the community has lost two true heroes.

"The family and the community are really going to miss them both a lot."

Richard Arnold was laid to rest Saturday. His son, Mack Arnold, is the current chief of the Arp Volunteer Fire Department.
