Health Alert: The CDC recommends Tdap vaccine for pregnant women

(CBS) - A new recommendation for pregnant women in their third trimester. The Centers for Disease Control says they should get the Tdap vaccine. It protects against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis. The CDC says the mother's body will turn the vaccine into protective antibodies that will pass to the fetus and protect him or her from pertussis, better known as whopping cough.

 


(CBS) - A new study finds eating brightly colored fruits and vegetables may prevent or delay the onset of ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, a degenerative disorder. Harvard researchers followed health data from more than one million people and found those with a lower risk of ALS also consumed more of the nutrients that give fruits and vegetables their color.

 


(CBS) - Research shows women who inherited harmful mutations in their BRCA gene are at higher risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. A new study published in the journal Cancer shows those same women also undergo menopause sooner than other women at the age of 50 compared at the age of 53. Researchers followed more than a thousand women and found women who are heavy smokers with the mutated gene have an even earlier onset of menopause at the age of 46.

 


(CBS) - A new Mayo clinic study finds people with heart disease have a higher risk of developing mild mental impairment. Researchers followed nearly 3,000 people and found the link strongest in women. The mental impairment involves language, thinking and judgement, but not memory.
