Report: Tyler, Longview 2 strongest economies in small U.S. cities

Posted: Updated:
TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH (KYTX) -

Tyler and Longview have two of the strongest economies among all small cities in the nation.

That's according to a new report released today.

Danny Mogle from our news partner at the Tyler paper has had a chance to look over the findings.

Danny, where did Longview and Tyler land on the national ranking of best performing small cities?

The group called the Milken Institute looked at the economies of 179 smaller cities all across the U.S.

They placed Longview at No. 6 and Tyler was right on its heels at No. 9.

What specifically did this group consider in making its rankings?

There were three major criteria considered.

How many new jobs were created; how much did salaries go up and how successful were the cities in attracting and growing high-tech industries.

Specifically the report praised both cities for being strong medical hubs that continue to generate all kinds of high paying jobs.

They also noted the cities are doing a good job in attracting tele-communications industries.

Danny, the paper talked to tom mullins at the Tyler economic development council.  What was his reaction?

He says the development council has been working very hard to diversify Tyler's economy to include many more companies that provide high paying technical jobs.

And all that hard is now paying off.
