Bridge asphalt surfacing in Marshall set to begin Feb. 4

Posted: Updated:

The City of Marshall is hereby providing notice that our Community Development Block Grant contractor, Advanced Paving of Dallas, will be closing the railroad overpass on High Bridge from Monday Feb. 4 through February 8 as part of a road surface improvement to the bridge. Residents and others need to plan ahead and use an alternate route during this short construction period.

The project involves milling and removal of existing asphalt from the bridge, installation of geotechnical micro-woven paving fabric, and installation of a 4" thick hot mix asphalt road surface. This project is funded through our Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program for improvements in low income areas of town at a cost $38,095.65.

Repaving of the High Bridge Overpass is necessary because of endless surface repairs that have been required for years because the sub-base of the road surface over the bridge is constructed of very thick treated timbers over steel support members. The flexibility of the timbers has allowed the road surface to flex to the point that the asphalt material comes apart and creates potholes. In addition, the spaces between the timbers has allowed asphalt material to gradually seep in between the cracks and also creating potholes. To solve the sub-base issue, this project includes installation of geotechnical micro-woven paving fabric over the sub-base which will reduce the surface asphalt movement and eliminate asphalt seeping between the timbers and should greatly increase the useful life of the new bridge road surface.
