Reports show local and national economy on the right track

Tyler, TX (KYTX) --  The job market is off to a good start in 2013, as we see signs the economy is recovering nationwide and in East Texas.

A jobs report due out Wednesday by the U.S. Government is expected to show employers added 192,000 jobs in January.

And the City of Tyler isn't slouching either. A report by the Milken Institute ranks it No. 9 on best-performing small cities.

"We have a lot of growth coming in, in a lot of different directions," Tom Mullins, President of the Tyler Economic Development Council, said.

One of those directions, is the medical field. Tyler boasts 3 primary regional hospitals, support facilities, and specialized hospitals.

With Tyler's changing demographic, the demand is there. "Being an orthopedic spine hospital, what we're seeing is an aging population here in the area," Tony Wahl, CEO of Texas Spine and Joint Hospital, said.

The area of telecommunications, also taking the spotlight.

"Tyler is our largest employee base for Suddenlink in the nation. We've seen about a 10% growth over the past year," Skip Ogle, Director of Public Relations for Suddenlink, said.

Those jobs include retail teams at the call center, some in administration, and broadband technicians.
