Health Alert: Obesity linked to multiple sclerosis in children

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Obesity may increase the risk of multiple sclerosis in children. A study in the journal Neurology found the risk is highest among girls. Researchers say overweight girls are one and a half times more likely to get MS and extremely obese girls have four times the risk. Doctors say parents of overweight children should pay attention to symptoms such as tingling and numbness or weakness in the arms or legs.

(CBS) - A new Oxford study shows what most doctors suspected, which is a vegetarian diet is good for the heart. Researchers looked at 45,000 patients and found people who don't eat meat have a 32 percent lower risk of being hospitalized with heart disease. Findings show vegetarians also have lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

(CBS) - A study out of Finland finds being single is not good for the heart. Doctors say single people are about 60 percent more likely to suffer a heart attack, and they're also at a higher risk of dying from a heart problem. Researchers aren't sure why but say married people tend to have healthier habits and are more likely to take medications regularly.
