Whitehouse residents to decide on legalizing beer, wine sales

Posted: Updated:
TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH (KYTX) -

Residents in Whitehouse will decide in may whether they want their city to go wet.

A petition to legalize the sale of beer and wine for off premise consumption was successful.

Joining us with the update is Faith Harper at the Tyler Morning Telegraph.

Faith we were told that the petition needed about 730 signatures.

The City Secretary in Whitehouse tells us that they were able to verify more than 800 signatures which is more than enough to put the issue on the May ballot.

The last time this came up, residents voted it down.

That election occurred three years ago. At that time 54 percent of the voters said no to wine and beer sales from stores.

There was also a petition drive for beer and wine sales in Justice of the Peace Precinct 1.

How did that turn out?

The election administrator in Smith County says this drive was not successful because the petition was not submitted by the deadline.

However there is still time to get it on the ballot for the November election.
