Man gets 18 years in prison for 2009 fatal wreck

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - A Longview man received 18 years in prison today after he pled guilty to manslaughter in a 2009 fatal wreck that killed a Tatum man.

Gregg County prosecutors say David Charles Deem, 30, was intoxicated on alcohol when he was involved in an Aug. 22, 2009, wreck on Texas 149 that left 49-year-old William McIlwain dead and severely injured McIlwain's wife. A grand jury indicted Deem on five counts including murder, but Deem accepted a plea agreement that dropped four of the five counts, including the murder charge.

Gregg County 188th District Judge David Brabham found that a deadly weapon was used in the wreck, which means Deem must serve at least nine years of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.

According to a state trooper who investigated the wreck, Deem's pickup was northbound and McIlwain's pickup, which was headed south, collided while Deem was passing in a no passing zone.
