Slain Kaufman County prosecutor worked in Gregg County DA's Office

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Gregg County District Attorney Carl Dorrough described slain Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse as "bigger than his small frame would look."

Hasse prosecuted criminal cases mostly in Gregg County's 188th District Court from March 2010 until July 2010, when he joined the Kaufman County DA's Office. Hasse was gunned down on his way to work at the Kaufman County Courthouse on Thursday.

Dorrough said Hasse interviewed in Gregg County in February 2010. He spent more than a decade  in private practice in the Dallas area, especially Rockwall County, after an early career as a criminal prosecutor.

"He was good in the courtroom and he was good in front of a jury," Dorrough said. "Someone with his background and experience, particularly in an office this size, we were happy to have him come on board."

Hasse took a job in Kaufman County's District Attorney's Office after a little more than four months in Gregg County, so that he could be closer to his widowed mother, Dorrough said. While working in Longview, Hasse traveled back to North Texas most weekends, he said.

"I really think that he loved prosecution," Dorrough said. "I think that's one of the reasons he came this far away, is that he wanted to get back into prosecution. It was something he loved doing, he was good at it. In essence, he brought a lot of experience to this office, and we were tickled pink to have him here."
