Those in need give back by donating blood

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - East Texans who are getting help from Mission Tyler, are giving back in their own way.

Carter Blood Care partners with Mission Tyler's weekly Hunger for Love event under the Gentry bridge, where even people without much, gave what they could.

Hunger for Love, also known as Breakfast Under the Bridge, started out as a way to feed East Texans in need - but it has turned into so much more.

Mission Tyler Executive Director Travis White says, "We don't just want to feed them. The people we serve here, we're getting to know them, we're helping them find jobs, and connecting them to other services."

One of those services, involves a new partnership with Carter Blood Care. Donating blood is a way for those getting help, to give back.

"They don't have a lot but a lot of them have a heart to want to help others and give back," White says.

Ricky Huey has been getting help from Mission Tyler, and attending Hunger for Love under the bridge for three months now

"I love this place!" he said.

He says he gives back by donating blood, every chance he gets.

"Every time I see one of these trucks!" he said.

The people that get on the Carter Blood Care bus aren't just giving back to their community members. They're also getting a quick health check up.

Nyk Moy with Carter Blood Care says, "A lot of people who come here are under resourced, don't have insurance, don't have jobs, don't have an income so one of the benefits we are able to offer is they get a free health screening. They get their blood pressure, their iron level, their cholesterol, their blood type, a lot of things they wouldn't be getting elsewhere."

Huey says the health check up is a great help.

"It gives me a little sense of security. I'm healthy."

He's healthy and happy to be right where he's at.

Carter Blood Care is always looking for partners for blood drives whether it's a church, a business, a school, or local event. All you have to do is call up a local representative and you can host a drive at your own location.
