Kilgore PD credits patrols with preventing possible theft

Posted: Updated:

KILGORE/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Kilgore police credited one of its patrol officers today for possibly preventing a crime last week.

According to the Kilgore Police Department Facebook page, officer Brady Middlebrooks was patrolling on FM 1252 in north Kilgore on Thursday when he noticed a truck and trailer with defective tail lamps. Middlebrooks stopped the truck on the traffic violation and spoke with the truck's four occupants, one of whom was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

"While speaking with the other parties, officer Middlebrooks heard conflicting stories as to where the group was heading and to what purpose," according to Kilgore PD. "Finally, one person in the group spoke privately with the officer and stated they were out looking for a local oilfield business in order to steal drill pipe."

Other occupants in the truck denied they were out looking to commit a crime, leaving police to release the other three occupants because no adequate probably cause was established, according to police. No signs of criminal trespass were found at businesses in the area, according to police.

"This is a good example of what having officers actively patrolling can actually prevent crime from occurring," according to Kilgore PD's Facebook page.
