Stand for the Silent campaign lands in Texas

Posted: Updated:

Kirk Smalley and his wife lost their son 2 years ago because of bullying. But it wasn't the bully who took their child's life, Smalley says his son came home from school one day and decided he didn't want to live anymore.
At just 11-year-old Ty Smalley felt there was nothing more to live for. Kirk Smalley says his son Ty was the victim of years school bullying.
"No other baby needs to live through what Ty had to go through."
So Smalley and his wife have dedicated their lives to asking the world to 'Stand for the Silent'.
IT'S A CAMPAIGN THEY'VE CREATED TO SPREAD THE WORD AND REALITY OF BULLYING BY Sharing their story with children just like Ty.
"It could hurt somebody inside, it could hurt the affection of their family."
Middle school student Abby Smith says she sees bullying every day at school, in many different forms.
"You did this and you did that, you're ugly and you're not...it's stupid."
"I think they get some satisfaction out of it because they pick on smaller people."
And student David Hickman says he knows this personally.
"I kinda bully but I try not to do it as much because I've been bullied and I don't like how it felt."
According to a bullying website, these are signs parents can look for when they suspect their child is being bullied:
  1. Becoming withdrawn
  2. Showing fear when it is time to go to    school
  3. Increasing signs of depression
  4. Decline in school performance
  5. Noticeable decline in how the child sees him or herself
  6. Signs of physical altercations
"We never had a clue Ty was thinking about taking his own life.
He says parents have to get involved, stay involved & ask questions.
"We have the power to make that stop, but it takes all of us working together to do that."
The message he delivers to every school he visits, telling students to remember they are somebody.
"Anything that stops them from being a bully or from doing what our son did...it's worth whatever we got to do."

Kirk Smalley and his wife have delivered their campaign to more than 600 schools across the nation since the death of their son. The  campaign has also  received national attention.
