J.B.'s Journal: Beatles 50th Anniversary

Posted: Updated:

"The Beatles really started that high compression, first group I knew the meter went up, stayed up."

Music producer Robin Hood Brians remembers hearing the debut album of the Beatles, "Please, Please Me," when it came out 50 years ago.

"I knew they were going to be a smash hit, had everything going for them."

Robin Hood opened his Tyler studio in the 1960's, during the height of Beatlemania.  He heard the influence the Fab Four's music had on artists.

"One of the biggest hits I recorded in this studio was by John Fred & the Playboy Band called 'Judy in Disguise With Glasses,' that was a joke for them, they were answering 'Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.' "

Many of the bands would warm up on Beatles songs, no matter what kind of music they were recording.

Songs are universal, for instance, yesterday, play it classical or… Yesterday, that's what makes them great."

50 years later, the Beatles are still one of the most critically acclaimed acts in the history of pop music.

"The Beatles recorded 13 original albums but they sold over one billion worldwide."
"Today too many producers try to make everything crisp, just like you got your ear shoved in every instrument, there was a layering effect when they recorded vinyl."
"They wrote great material, going to be great forever."

For CBS 19, I'm J.B. Smith
Well a lot has changed since then and that's my story.

Robin Hood Studios in Tyler has produced music for ZZ Top, Five Americans, Ike and Tina Turner, The Uniques and many others. Robin Hood's studio is in the same location on Sunnybrook where he opened 50 years ago.
