Man arrested after string of Gregg County burglaries

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Police say Russel Ray Clark has been busy these past few months breaking into several businesses in Gregg County. Kilgore police tell me a customer caught Clark stealing 10 bags of  fertilizer from Walmart's Outdoor Living section. Once Clark was in police custody, officers realized he was wanted on eight other burglaries. They say he even broke into some businesses more than once.

"I think he's probably not in his right mind for coming back because we had pretty good video of him the first time."
Miles Darby owns the Bar K Ranch store, north of Longview. It's a store police say this man Russell Ray Clark admits to breaking into twice including last Wednesday.
"Smashed it with a pipe or a wrench and of course our burglar alarm immediately went off."
Clark got away, but he was arrested the next day on another heist.
"Your luck is eventually gonna run out, if you're seen one time and you got away with it you should probably count your blessings and don't test your luck."
Brad Smith is a regular customer at Murphy's USA gas station in Kilgore.
Police say Clark broke into Murphy USA three times, earning the name "The Beef Jerky Bandit.
"Come in and he'd wipe out all of our beef jerky stole our red bulls."
Murphy USA cashier Kerry Arnold says surveillance cameras would video Clark coming in overnight, breaking locks and taking snacks.
"I think it was partially stupid..I mean you come and steal our food?"
"I have never heard of somebody stealing beef jerky, energy drink and peat moss."
Clark was arrested during a traffic stop, moments after a Wal-Mart customer saw him driving off with 10 bags of peat moss from the store.
Clark was driving the same SUV caught by surveillance cameras during the break-ins at the Longview and Kilgore gas stations.
"It makes me feel safer to be able to work and close at night up here."
Clark was booked into the Gregg county jail Monday. He faces five theft charges and is being held on a $100,000 bond.
