Health Alert: Another promising drug could help fight brain cancer

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - A combination of Avastin with another drug is showing promise in fighting brain cancer. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic found that pairing Avastin with a second drug called Dasatinib stopped the spread of tumors in a small group of patients. A larger trial is underway.

(CBS) - A new study blames alcohol for causing approximately 20,000 cancer deaths in the United States each year. Researchers at Boston University say breast cancer was the most common type of alcohol-attributable cancer deaths in women. Cancers of the mouth, throat and esophagus were the most common types in men. And while the higher the amount of alcohol, the higher the risk, researchers say even the average of one and a half drinks each day or less, accounted for 30 percent of all alcohol-related cancer deaths.

(CBS) - Public bans on smoking do seem to cut down on the number of babies born prematurely. That's the finding of a new study in Belgium. Researchers looked at a series of smoking bans there. First in most public places, then in restaurants and finally in bars. They found that after each phase of the ban the preterm birth rate went down. Preterm birth is defined as being born before 37 weeks.
