Former Mount Pleasant police sergeant gets 50 years for assaulting child

Posted: Updated:

GILMER/UPSHUR COUNTY (KYTX) - A former Mount Pleasant police sergeant was sentenced to 50 years in prison today, after he admitted to aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Eric Jason Campbell, 40, was indicted on four counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child by an Upshur County grand jury last year. The victim was 14-years-old at the time of the offense.

Under a plea agreement, Campbell accepted the 50-year sentence on Count 1 of the indictment, and prosecutors dropped three other counts against him, according to Campbell's attorney, Edward Choy.

The girl and her mother were in the courtroom for the plea. In an emotional victim impact statement, the girl told Campbell the incident would haunt her for the rest of her life.

Campbell resigned from the Mount Pleasant Police Department in August.

This was not Campbell's first foray on opposite sides of the law. In July 2008, he was arrested in Upshur County for injury to a child or elderly person, online records show. He was never indicted or prosecuted for the charge, according to records.

Union Hill Independent School District, Upshur County and the local emergency services district also have a pending delinquent tax suit against Campbell.
