Wildfires in Titus County after more than 100-acre fire near Como

Posted: Updated:

COMO/HOPKINS COUNTY (KYTX) - Multiple Hopkins County fire departments fought a more than 100-acre wildfire about six miles southwest of Como this afternoon.

According to the Hopkins County Fire Department in Sulphur Springs, there were no injuries and no structures damaged or threatened, but only grass after a controlled burn got out of control.

Meanwhile, the Texas Forest Service was called in to assist Titus County local firefighters in one of two active fires, according to David Abernathy, assistant chief regional fire coordinator for the Texas Forest Service. The forest service is helping volunteer firefighters with an about five-acre wildfire north of Mount Pleasant near the Sulphur River, but Abernathy said the fire is contained.

He said volunteer firefighters in Harrison County are being called on a wildfire somewhere in the county, Abernathy said.

Abernathy said wildfire dangers pick up on windy days in East Texas when the humidity level dips below 36 percent. The National Weather Service recorded 25 percent humidity in Mount Pleasant at about 2:45 p.m. Sunday.
