EXCLUSIVE: Fishermen save drowning men, tell own story

Posted: Updated:

LAKE PALESTINE (KYTX) - Two fishermen are rescued today after their boat sinks near the Villages Marina on Lake Palestine.

CBS 19 was the only station to speak with the men who saved those fisherman about what happened.

Dallas brothers Greg and Jeremy Frazer have been fishing on Lake Palestine since they were kids. Sunday morning, they were getting ready to take their boat out at the Villages Marina around 10:45.

"We were actually running late so it was all weird how it worked. God works in mysterious ways," Greg said.

As they pulled their boat out, a man came running up to them yelling.

Greg said, "A guy had come up from the neighborhood over here that saw the boat capsize, they were hollering for help."

When the brothers got to the sinking boat, they found Brian Capps and Dave Davidson in the water with life jackets on. They say Capps was hanging onto an ice cooler.

Jeremy said Capps was incoherent and could tell he already had hypothermia.

"We struggled to get him in but we pretty much tossed him in and then when we did I stripped loose of my overalls that I had on just to cover him up."

Once Jeremy and Greg got both men in the boat, they called 911.  Smith County Game Warden Chris Swift says it's a miracle both men made it out alive.

"After 5 or 10 minutes, even in 55 or 60 degree water, you start feeling it pretty quick," Swift said.

It was extremely windy all day long. There was even a lake wind advisory in effect. Swift says you need to be extremely careful and know your boat's capacity before taking it out in conditions like that.

"You really need to pick your spots and if you have a small boat, it's just not a good day to go fishing," Swift said.

Preparing early can help you avoid a near-tragedy like this.

Nurses with Trinity Mother Frances Hospital said Brian Capps was treated and released.

Noonday Fire Department, Smith County Game Wardens, and EMS responded to the scene. They say the men's boat sunk all the way to the bottom of the lake.
