BBB recommends safe ways to file taxes

Posted: Updated:

EAST TEXAS (KYTX) - Tax season is in full swing, and that means many of us are trying to file and get our refunds in the mail.

But before you make any hasty decisions, the Better Business Bureau recommends doing a little research.

Cbs 19's Melissa Daigle shows us how we can keep our money safe and avoid scams this tax season.

It's that time of year again.

Tax preparers are working overtime to help you file by the April 15th deadline.
But Kaylen Burgess with the Better Business Bureau of Central East Texas reminds us that not all tax preparers are the same.

"You want someone who's really going to thoroughly look at your taxes and you want to check them out before you do business with them. You can do that in a number of ways," Burgess said.

When hiring a tax preparer, Burgess also recommends you ask around for referrals and check their credibility. That way, you know you're working with someone reputable. She also says you want to check their accessibility. That way, when tax season is over, you know there's still someone who's going to be around to help you out in case you have any concerns or problems with your return.

Especially if you have a complicated return, you want someone who knows what they're doing and has the experience.
Burgess says it's a red flag if someone claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service contacts you through email.

"The IRS will never do that," said Burgess.

"That's a scam that usually pops up around this time of year, so just be on the lookout for it. You could risk your identity getting stolen."

And Burgess says that can be very time consuming and difficult  to reverse.

"Especially around this time of year because you're trying to file your taxes, you're trying to get that put away and get that taken care of. And, it just makes it a bigger mess when someone starts charging things on your credit card," Burgess said.

Just taking a few extra precautions can save you from a lot of frustrations this tax season.

The Better Business Bureau of Central East Texas had nearly 18 hundred tax-related complaints last year.
