Gohmert on sequester cuts: "That was originally Obama's idea"

Posted: Updated:
TYLER (KYTX) -

Congressman Louie Gohmert expressed concern Tuesday over President Obama's remarks on the spending cuts that automatically take effect on March 1, 2013.

Obama called in police and firefighters to help him talk republicans out of letting steep spending cuts take effect.

"These cuts are not smart," Obama said. "They are not fair. They will hurt our economy. They will add hundreds of thousands of Americans to the unemployment rolls. This is not an abstraction. People will lose their jobs."

The automatic cuts, known in Washington as "the sequester," kick-in March 1st. They were designed to be so severe that they'd force lawmakers to reach a budget deal.

"That was originally Obama's idea," Rep. Louie Gohmert (R - Texas) said. "He's the one that proposed that idea. I was totally against the sequestration in July, a year and a half ago."

Gohmert said he now believes letting the cuts take effect might be the best way to fix the budget--without bringing the dire consequences the president is predicting.

"We can't get people to just make cuts like we should make," Gohmert said. "And in fact most of these cuts are actually to growth. So they're not what some of us would consider real cuts."

"There's a smarter way to do this," Obama said. "To reduce our deficits, without harming our economy. But, Congress has to act."

The White House wants a plan with smaller spending cuts combined with a tax increase.
