Sen. Eltife talks about possibility of gas tax increase for transportation crisis

Posted: Updated:

Tyler, TX -- State lawmakers say funding transportation is reaching a crisis point, and something needs to be done to fix it. Sen. Kevin Eltife says one possibility is increasing the gas tax.

But, drivers already feel drained at the pump."It costs me like $70 to fill up, it's not fun I can tell you that much," Brandon Ingram of Tyler, said.

There's another struggle at the Texas Department of Transportation.

"We have to fund transportation projects, and the way we've done that the last 10 years is by issuing bonds, which is insanity," Sen. Eltife said.

He adds we're in a jam, $13 billion in debt.

"And now, we've got to dig out of that hole. We've used toll roads to leverage all of our money in the state," Eltife said.

The Republican senator has suggested raising the gas tax, which sits at .20 a gallon, by a dime.

"I'm not big on tax hikes but you've got to be realistic about how we're going to pay for this," Eltife said.

TxDot currently needs 4 billion dollars more a year added to its budget to be able to meet all of its needs.
