Study: Young people not getting tested for HIV

EAST TEXAS (KYTX) -

A new study by the centers for disease control shows young people are not getting tested for HIV.
At least 60 percent of Americans 13 to 24 years old do not know they are living with the disease. And many of them are right here in East Texas.
"I believe that people don't get tested because they're scared of the results,"  Tyler Junior College student Chelsey Davis says despite all the warnings about  HIV, young people still take risks.
"Everybody knows that you can catch anything from anybody, but they still do it."
Robert Davis says he encourages everyone his age to get tested.
"At this point, it shouldn't be a lack of knowledge, but as a college student myself, I still get tested. We have testing here."
"I don't think that young people realize how important it is for them to be tested."
Janette Deas Calhoun with East Texas cares says in Smith County, almost 11 percent of people infected with HIV are between the ages of 18 to 24.
She says the same statistic holds true for Gregg County.
"We've got to reach out to the younger populations because in our culture, young people are experimenting earlier."
But Calhoun says there's still a misconception about HIV.
"I still think the stigma is very, very prevalent."
In fact, the stigma is still so strong here, Calhoun says they won't even put the name of their organization on the front of their building. And, even without that, some people will only come here to get information if they can get in through this back door entrance.
"And, I still think the community does not understand the true face of HIV.
The truth is, there is no one face to HIV.
"This can touch anyone, not just a segment of a population."
"They're not going to tell you if they have anything or not. That's why you should get tested."
According to the CDC, 50,000 Americans are infected with HIV each year, and one in four of them  are between the ages of 13 and 24.
