Tyler ISD to decide whether to call $160.5M bond election

Posted: Updated:
TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH (KYTX) -

Tyler ISD trustees will decide whether to call a $160.5 million bond election in May at their meeting Thursday night.

And supporters and opponents of the proposal are gearing up for the meeting.

For more, we go live to Megan Middleton with our news partner the Tyler Morning Telegraph.

Megan, what are supporters planning for tomorrow night?

Supporters with the group "Tyler Proud" are planning a rally before the meeting in the parking lot of the Plyler Instructional Complex, where the board meeting takes place at 7.

They are asking supporters to wear Tyler Proud T-shirts and show their support for the board calling a bond election and the community passing one.

And what about the opposition?

Well, we just learned that members of the "No More Excuses, Tyler ISD" coalition and the Grassroots America group are planning a press conference to  announce results of efforts to answer questions about problems they see within the school district regarding academics and other issues … as well as facility plans.

And at least one member of the No More Excuses group we spoke with tonight also planned to attend Thursday's meeting.

What's being proposed in this bond package?

The $160.5 Million Bond Would Pay for

--Remodeling of Rice and Dixie elementary schools;

--Construction of three new middle schools;

--Construction of a career and technology education center to serve students at both high schools

For more on what both sides of the issue say about the bond proposal, read Emily Guevara's story in tomorrow's Tyler Morning Telegraph.
