Saving money by going green

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - If you need inspiration to spruce up your home or make it more modern, take advantage of the 33rd Annual Home Products Show this weekend at Harvey Convention Center.

There are plenty of trends in home improvement projects, but one that can help save people money is going green!

"When gas prices go up, all energy prices are going up. So, everyone is thinking, what can I do to make my home energy efficient, keep my bills down?"

Melissa Simon with Texas Responsible Energy and Efficiency or "TREE," says using solar energy to power your house is one way to do that

"When you use solar energy, you're producing your own electricity. So, if you pair that with energy efficiency, keeping the usage down. And then, you produce your own, you're able to set you bills.

By locking in your price, you won't have to pay more if electricity rates go up.

Jason Campbell with Campbell Custom Homes says that's appealing to many of his customers.

"We have a lot of people looking at things such as solar, solar panels, solar on the house, even if it's just solar at the gate."

And now, there's technology that can help cut your electricity costs even when you're away from your home.

Brandon Carpenter with Cross Systems Audio Visual says he can program all of your devices to respond to one remote control that you can take anywhere.

"You can just remotely dial back into your house to set your thermostat to off or higher. You can also turn it on or lower when you're coming home."

Technology that's no longer a concept of the future.

Another money saving tip- switching to LED lighting.

"If you retrofit your house with LED lights, that brings your bill down quite a bit. You're replacing a 60 watt bulb with a 6 watt bulb in a lot of cases."

And, that can save you hundreds of dollars each month.

Another piece of advice for you, think about upgrading to a tight sealed home as far as windows and doors. That means you need proper insulation.

Most lenders will also take into account all the energy efficiencies you put into your home. They will roll the extra costs for green products into your overall mortgage loan. And, in many cases, you can get discounts or grants for using those products.

This is the 33rd year the Tyler Builders Association has hosted the Home Products Show.

It starts Friday night at Harvey Convention Center from 6 - 9 p.m. You can also go Saturday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 - 5 p.m.

Tickets are $5 at the door and children 12 and under get in free.
