Tyler Youth Orchestra honors local musician

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Talented Tyler musician, and loved music educator, Phil Rumbley, is honored for his work in the community and his dedication to students.

"Teaching is my life!" he says.

Rumbley passes his love for music onto the children of East Texas every day. He's the band director at Tyler Grace Community School, and also teaches at UT Tyler and TJC.

"I think the most important thing is music education and how important that is in the kids' lives and the students' lives," he said.

The loved and respected musician spends every waking moment teaching kids to love music the way he does.

He says, "It's just a great joy to be able to have the opportunity to teach the kids and watch the light bulbs go off and learn about music."

Rumbley is the 12th musician to be honored by the Tyler Youth Orchestra during the Annual Noted Circle Concert. It's the only concert the organization charges admission for - but all the proceeds go straight to the kids.

"Music is so important to every child and every human being," Rumbley says.

Rumbley plays an array of instruments and he says a lot of that comes from his family.

"My mother has her PhD in theater and my dad had his Music Ed degree and so I guess genetics definitely play a role! So there was never a dull moment in my house growing up in those surroundings."

He says he's overwhelmed to receive such a special honor from the community he loves so much. Rumbley says he wants to share the award with all music educators, who he says make such a difference in the lives of the children they teach.
