Southside Park may get outdoor area

Posted: Updated:
TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH (KYTX) -

Southside Park may soon see an outdoor sitting area for residents seeking conversation over a good book.

The city's Parks and Recreation Board voted today to grant permission to proceed with the sitting area, which would be funded partly with donations to the Literacy Council of Tyler.

For more on this story, we go live to Megan Middleton with our news partner the Tyler Morning Telegraph.

Megan, what would this area of the park be used for?

Well the idea is the area could be used for reading and discussion … and could be a place to host guest speakers … or for an outdoor classroom for students.

There is also a need to access Rose Rudman Trail from Southside Park. And the hope is this would create an entrance that could complement the trail.

It's also a way to honor donors to the Literacy Council of Tyler.

Who plans to donate to help create this space?

Well, in addition to donations to the literacy council --- Land Visions --- a Tyler-based landscape architecture firm would donate its services to build the $20,000 garden area. And area Boy Scouts would contribute some of the labor to help build the park.

What special features could the sitting area include?

Well, it would have a small garden – with pavers listing the names of donors on each one.

It also would have a donated bronze statue of two children reading on a bench. And there would be a granite wall that would tell the story of the Literacy Council.

For more details on other plans for the park addition, read Dayna Worchel's story in tomorrow's Tyler Morning Telegraph.
