Blizzard hammers Panhandle, Plains

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX/CNN) - While East Texans are dealing with high winds and cooler temperatures -- parts of the state are seeing snow.

The National Guard was called to West Texas to help stranded drivers caught in the whipping winds and whiteout conditions. The National Weather Service is calling this a "crippling, historic blizzard." 19- inches of snow has fallen in Amarillo. Almost all roads in the Texas Panhandle are said to be covered with snow.

In Kansas City, people are still trying to dig themselves out of the snow dumped on them last week. Some places got 22 inches. People are being warned to stay off the roads.

"This one could be much more treacherous to travel in and we just ask you to exercise that more abundance and caution," says Kansas Governor Sam Brownback.

At least 2 deaths are already being blamed on the storm.  A state of emergency has been declared for Kansas City, Missouri.
