PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) – A Plano lawmaker has introduced
legislation to create a tax-free holiday for gun-buyers in Texas. The
holiday would take place on Texas Independence Day, March 2.
"We filed this bill, the Texas Gun Ownership Reinforcement Act,
because we sincerely and strongly believe that Texas should take the
lead in the fight against the Federal Government's attempts to infringe
on our Second Amendment rights," said State Representative Jeff Leach,
who introduced the bill. "This act encourages and incentivizes lawful
gun ownership and allows law abiding citizens, hunters and sportsmen the
opportunity to save money on firearms."
If passed, the tax exemption would include shotguns, rifles, pistols,
revolvers, gun accessories and ammunition, as well as other hunting
equipment.
"Various states have taken actions in more of a defensive sense to
protect and preserve our Second Amendment rights," says Leach. "This act
specifically is more of an offensive bill in that it encourages lawful
gun ownership in Texas."
Louisiana passed the ‘Annual Louisiana Second Amendment Weekend
Holiday Act' in 2009 which provides an exemption from state and local
sales and use taxes on individuals' purchases of firearms, ammunition
and hunting supplies on the first Friday through Sunday of each
September.
