NACOGDOCHES  (KYTX) — Nacogdoches school officials credit the quick actions of Emeline Carpenter Academy of Technology and Science staff for keeping students safe after a suspected electrical fire began in a prekindergarten classroom Tuesday morning.

"Carpenter staff are to be commended for jumping into action," said NISD Superintendent Dr. Fred Hayes. "In a stressful time, they safely evacuated the students and maintained composure while waiting for help from the fire department. NISD is thankful for their dedicated service."

Nacogdoches Fire Department responded to the fire which began around 10 a.m. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the prekindergarten classroom where it began. However, smoke from the incident affected 12 classrooms in the same wing.

NISD personnel are assessing the damage and making plans to repair the school facility as soon as possible. Until the work is complete, students and staff affected by the fire have been relocated to another portion of the school.

The school has resumed its regular schedule and will be open tomorrow.
