Smith County Precinct 1 will hold beer, wine vote in November

Posted: Updated:

SMITH COUNTY (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - Enough signatures have been verified by the county to call a local option election for the sale of beer and wine for off premise consumption in Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 in November.

JP Precinct 1 lies mostly within the city of Tyler limits and is already wet. Small sections of Justice Precinct 1 jut just outside the city's northeastern, northwestern and southwestern limits.

Texas Petition Strategies, the Austin-based consulting firm in charge of collecting petition signatures, failed to return enough signatures to place the measure on ballots in May.

Smith County Election Administrator Karen Nelson said 1,835 signatures of JP Precinct 1 registered voters were needed to place the measure on ballots and that 2,206 signatures were verified. The Smith County Commissioners Court is expected to accept the verified signatures and call the election during a March 19 court meeting, she said.

Only registered voters in the precinct can vote in the local option election in November.
