Political up-and-comer George Prescott Bush will be in Tyler this year to speak at the Hispanic Business Alliance Sixth Annual Achievers Awards Luncheon.

"We asked and he agreed," Price Arre-dondo, director of the Hispanic Business Alliance, said this week.

The event is plan-ned for Oct. 29, but a venue has not been decided on, he said.
"We probably expect a larger crowd given that George P. is now in the news a lot and is looking to run for a statewide office," Arredondo said. "We expect 500 plus; hopefully around 600." About 400 people attended last year's luncheon.

Bush, 36, of Fort Worth, told the Associated Press he is close to settling on campaigning for Texas Land Commissioner next year. He doesn't expect to make up his mind until he knows what Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a fellow Republican, decides to do. "We for sure are running, the question is the office," Bush told The Associated Press in January.

In November, Bush filed papers with the Texas Ethics Commission, declaring himself a candidate for office in 2014. Bush's father is former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, his grandfather is former President George H.W. Bush and his uncle is former President and Texas Gov. George W. Bush.

Bush has assisted and supported many Republican campaigns, including those of his uncle and father. He is the deputy finance chair for the Republican Party of Texas and is the chairman of the Hispanic Republicans of Texas. He is also the national co-chairman of Maverick Pac, a national political action committee dedicated to engaging the next generation of Republican voters, according to Bush's biography.

"We felt he would be a good draw with what's happening here in Texas with the continued growth of the Hispanic population," Arredondo said. "We look forward to him bringing a great message on how he sees the Hispanic business community impacting the state of Texas and the Hispanic growth. … We're looking for someone to give us a different perspective. Why not him? He's up and coming and we're certainly looking forward to having him."

Bush received his undergraduate degree from Rice University before teaching history to at-risk students at Homestead High School in Florida's Miami-Dade Independent School District and created its first speech and debate team that competed statewide.

He returned to Texas to work on his uncle, George W. Bush's presidential campaign and in 2000 attended The University of Texas School of Law, where he earned his juris doctorate. After his clerkship for federal Judge Sidney Allen Fitzwater, Bush joined Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP as a corporate attorney. He co-founded Pennybacker Capital LLC, a real estate private equity firm, in 2007. Most recently, Bush founded St. Augustine Partners LLC, a Fort Worth-based investment firm focused on oil and gas transactions and consulting for private businesses.

In 2006, Bush joined the U.S. Naval Reserves, and in 2010 began an eight-month tour of duty in Afghanistan and was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal.

Bush co-chaired a $30 million capital campaign for Big Brothers Big Sisters in North Texas and serves as co-chairman of the Dallas/Fort Worth Celebration of Reading. He is the Tarrant County chairman of Uplift Education and serves on the board of trustees for the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin.

Arredondo said they will be looking at sponsors for the event, and ticket sales should go on sale within the next 90 days. He said the Hispanic Business Alliance Advisory Board will then start the process of looking at the candidates for each of the seven categories for which awards are given during the luncheon.

Awards are given to the following categories: Restaurant; Micro Business; Established Business; Construction Contractor; Woman-Owned Business; Professional; and Nonprofit Organization.
