Changes Coming to Discovery Science Place

TYLER (KYTX) - The Discovery Science Place in Tyler is getting a makeover. Construction is underway now.

Discovery Science Place CEO Phil Lindsey says it was time for them to get back to their middle name- science. And, there's plenty of ways they'll be doing that now and in years to come.

"We're really moving forward on bringing a lot of high level science education here to East Texas," says Lindsey.

He's behind this year's half million dollar project. He says there's a need for more science in children's lives.

"The news is not good in terms of science education, nationally. And, we think we can be a resource here in East Texas that's going to be very valuable to the school districts."

Frankston teacher Debbie House is looking forward to the changes.

"This is hands on. This is what's great for this age group. They can do everything with their hands."

Tyler parent Melissa Jackson is also behind the project.

"I think any time you can incorporate more science, more math into their play time, that they're going to keep that as they grow and get older and get to "big kid school," elementary school, and learn more." she says.

Some of the changes are already here, like this new cinesphere that gives kids an idea of what Earth looks like from space.

And, some of them are still in the works, like this 3,000 square foot interactive butterfly exhibit that will demonstrate the life cycle of the insect.

Other plans are more long term. Lindsey says it's going to be a Jurassic summer with a new dinosaur exhibit.

Even the children's CBS19 studio is getting a science makeover.

"It's going to be more interactive." says Lindsey. "It's going to be more modern. And, the big part of that is going to be a hurricane simulator. So, people actually get to be in 75 mph wind."

Four-year-old Ella Dowling is already a fan of the exhibit.

"Because it's fun." she says.

And, so are her peers.

"I know a lot of my friends."

Kids like five-year-old Adrian Donnell say they're excited for more science-friendly exhibits.

"I like to play with them."

And, Lindsey is hoping other children will too.
