Winona house a total loss in fire; 3 dogs die inside

Posted: Updated:

SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) - A Winona couple lost their home and three dogs in a fire Monday afternoon on Devonne Drive off Highway 271, according to the Smith County fire marshal officials.

The fire was reported about 2:30 p.m., and six fire departments including Winona, Red Springs, Chapel Hill, Gladewater, Jackson Heights and Sabine VFDs responded. The Smith County Fire Marshal and Smith County sheriff's officials also responded to the scene.

The fire took about an hour-and-a-half to get under control. The fire began in a back part of the home, and spread quickly because of high winds, officials said.

The home's residents were not at home at the time of the fire, however an official said three pets perished in the fire.

Smith County fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
