TYLER (KYTX) - We're learning more about Tyler ISD's plans for Stewart Middle School.

District leaders want to turn the current middle school into a high school campus with a non-traditional education system.

"We feel good in what we have planned. We just need you to see the greatness and support us," said Orenthia Mason, School Board Vice President.

Tyler ISD school leaders stand in agreement that it's time to make a change to Stewart Middle School.

"The main point we want to stress is that this is an opportunity for students to truly excel," said Brad Spradlin, school board member.

The school district wants to change the middle school campus into the district's third high school campus.  It would be called "A.T. Stewart Academy of Excellence."

Students who are currently at John Tyler and Robert E. Lee High School would be allowed to attend. However, the school curriculum would be a little different.

"We're looking at pulling students out of the high schools and allowing students to apply who are excited about putting more emphasis on their academics," said Mason.

But, before this would happen, the district would have to pass the upcoming $160 million school bond in May.

It would then take two years to plan for the new school.

"We want to give as many choices for students and opportunities for them to excel if they're not wanting the traditional high school program," said Gary Mooring, TISD Superintendent.

Once the new school is completed, students who live north of Highway 31 would be moved to Boulter Middle School. Students who live south would attend a new middle school that would be built in the southwest part of the city.

"It is hard to let go, nobody likes changes with babies. But school districts all over the United States are having to looking at how better we can serve our students," said Mason

Proposed programs include:

-College Readiness
-Fine Arts
-Job Readiness
-Language Arts
-Math
-Mentoring Programs
-Science
-Technology Programs

The new school would open in fall of 2015. School leaders said any renovations needed for the current Stewart Middle School campus would not come from bond funds.

The reason the school bond must pass is to allow for additional middle school construction to provide room for the Stewart Middle School students.
