Kilgore Police: more than 30 shots fired outside apartment

Posted: Updated:

Police said Tuesday that an investigation into Monday night's shooting incident near the Kilgore College Campus turned up more than 30 bullet shells from several guns of varying caliber.

Investigators said the unidentified shooters began firing at random--without hitting anyone or anything--during a fight which had begun at Kilgore College between two students and spilled over into the surrounding community. The shots were fired by an apartment at the intersection of South Street and Hill Street.

One of the people who heard the shots being fired was a Kilgore College Police officer. He notified administrators who activated the school's Ranger Alert system, getting the word out very quickly to students who live in a nearby dorm and to other students at Kilgore College.

"I was at work at K-Mart in Longview and then my phone started going off and it was a text from Kilgore College saying there was a shooting," Kilgore College Student Michael Mathas said.

Mathas lives in that nearby dorm and called the area "pretty safe." The two texts that he got at work came from Kilgore College's Ranger Alert system.

"[It was] to let them know if you're in your dorm stay in your dorms, lock your doors," Kilgore College Spokesperson Chris Craddock said. "If you're not in your dorms, get in there as soon as possible just to make sure that you're safe."

Craddock said almost all the students are signed up for Ranger Alerts.

"The first one was sent out about 8:30 once we got word that this had happened," Craddock said.

Craddock said not long after that they brought in K-9 search teams to make sure whoever it was hadn't gotten on campus.

Kilgore Police officers said a fight broke out near the intersection of Hill Street and South Street just a few minutes before the gunfire. They said it's possible some of the people involved in the shooting may be Kilgore College Students.

The one lead investigators are sharing is that witnesses watched the unknown shooters leave in a tan 1990's Chevrolet Caprice, a dark green Chevrolet Tahoe or Suburban with big wheels and an older Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

They want help figuring out who the shooters are and where they went.
