Woman's Birthday Surprise Gives Back to Children's Advocacy Center

Posted: Updated:

Tyler, TX (KYTX) -- Most of us get presents on our birthday, but not Mary Richardson. Friends knew her true birthday wish would be for them to help support the Children's Advocacy Center of Smith County, as she's done the past several years.

It was a well-kept secret by 75 of her friends. "We were going to eat at a new place in Mineola, that's all I knew," Richardson said.

Friends like Suzanne Stubblefield say they wanted to put a spotlight on Richardson, who often gives hers away.

"She and her husband, Dr. Gene, have hearts just as big as a barn," Stubblefield said.

The CAC of Smith County is a place dedicated to children who have gone through painful emotional and physical trauma.

"It is the therapist, and the caregivers and the staff, that work miracles with those children and they do it on a shoes string budget," Elizabeth Sharkey, a former board member at the Advocacy Center, said.

Each woman brought a gift for the Rainbow Room at the CAC instead of giving a gift for Richardson.

"It'll brighten their day as they open these gifts and it's all kind of fun things in there for them," Richardson said.

She also hopes the initiative today may inspire others who want to help the community.
