Small town showcases booming business

LINDALE (KYTX) -

Business is booming in Lindale, and expanding the city at a fast pace. CBS 19's Amanda Roberson met up with local businesses at the 4th Annual Lindale Area Business Showcase.

The Lindale population increased by about 2,000 people between 2000 and 2012. Interstate 20 and US 69 play a big role in that growth. TxDOT traffic counts show about 25,000 cars travel US 69 between the major interstate intersection and Lindale every day. That heavy traffic has new business popping up all along the way and even older businesses are taking advantage.

"I'm all for growth because that just means more business for us," explained Jennifer Darr, a Lindale native. "Growing up here as a kid, really downtown was the central and heart of Lindale, but as the years have gone by we've really expanded our town from downtown all the way to the interstate."

Darr is showcasing her business, Lindale Flower Shop, at the Lindale business expo because she says any exposure is good for business.  "Since I bought the business three years ago, every year we've increased sales, but I do still have people that come to me and say 'I had no idea you were here' and I've been here over 66 years."

"Our retail sales tax numbers have rebounded from the recession. Last month we had a record sales tax," explained Lindale Economic Development Corporation President John Clary.

Clary said the city will continue to grow along I20. "The bulk of the inquiries that we get for business are right around US 69 and I-20. That is the highest traffic intersection along I-20 between Terrell and the state line. "

Clary added once Loop 49 is finished later this month the intersection at I20 will open the door to even more business.

"Even despite the size that it's becoming and the growth that we're facing, everybody knows that everybody here is just good people," said Holly Rand, expo organizer and president of Project Progress.

Rand said people are finding the advantages of business and small town charm. "It's easy to stay in your own hometown and not have to go outside your "borders" to find the services that are so important for life."

Neighborhoods and the school districts are also seeing growth. Each year Lindale ISD is adding about 100 new students to it's enrollment and more than 100 new home sites have been platted over the past couple months - meaning the economic circle should continue to grow.

More than 100 Lindale businesses were represented at the expo. For more information on next year's show, click here or call (903) 780-7969.
