Spring Break trout fishing

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - The weather is starting to get a little warmer and that means rainbow trout season is coming to a close. Those with "Texas Parks and Wildlife" and the "East Texas Woods and Water Foundation" want you to catch the last of the fish.

"I know what the rainbow trout are. I love to catch them, yeah."

68-year-old Kenward Goode says he's been fishing for nearly 50 years.

"Teaches you a lot of virtues in life. One being patience, the other one being persistent, and the other one is being prepared. It's called the "three Ps."

He seemed to be getting tested with the patience and persistence Ps when we talked to him.

"I sure would like to see one." he says.

No bites for Goode, but he says he knows they're out there.

More than 5,000 rainbow trout were dumped into Tyler ponds and lakes. That was in December, when they were really thriving.

"The water is warming up. And, that's good for a lot of fisheries, but it's not good for trout. Trout are a Winter time fish."

Richard Ott is the district fisheries manager for Texas Parks and Wildlife.

He says the Spring Break trout event is perfect for families wanting to have fun and save on gas money next week.

"The idea is we want to get the last of the trout out of the pond, have a really good event for Spring Break, and have everybody have a good time, and just make it a win-win situation."

"If you don't have a rod and reel, no problem. They have plenty to lend you. They want to make sure everyone comes out and catches the maximum of five trout per person while they're still out here in the water."

"We'd like the anglers to have that opportunity."

And Goode is hoping he'll have better luck then.

"When you do catch, there's a thrill. There's a thrill in the catch. And, then when you get to eat it, it's a double thrill." he says.

The Tyler Nature Center is stocked with about 2,000 trout alone.

The 10th annual Spring Break trout event is Monday through Thursday from 8:30 to noon. It's at the Tyler Nature Center off Bascom Road, by UT Tyler.

There's a five fish per person catching limit. You don't need a fishing license.
