Subaru recalls almost 50,000 "zombie" cars

Posted: Updated:

(CNN) - Japanese carmaker Subaru is recalling nearly 50-thousand vehicles because they run the risk of starting themselves without human intervention.

Among these "zombie cars" are the Legacy, Outback and Impreza models from 20-10 until 20-13. The recall also includes the 20-13 Crosstrek. Despite the paranormal nickname, Subaru says the problem seems to be with the remote engine starter. If the keychain fob is dropped, it may malfunction and start the engine. The engine could run until the fob battery is dead or the vehicle runs out of gas.

Subaru said that the recall begins at the end of April, when owners can get their faulty fobs replaced by dealers, free of charge.
