FAA approves Boeing 787 certification plan

Posted: Updated:

(CNN) - The Federal Aviation Administration has approved the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company's certification plan for the redesigned 787 battery system.

Boeing has been given the go ahead to test it in the air. The FAA says they thoroughly reviewed Boeing's proposed modifications and the company's plan to demonstrate that the system will meet FAA requirements. The fleet was grounded in January after a second battery smoldered and forced an emergency landing in Japan.

The certification plan is the first step in the process to evaluate the 787's return to flight and requires Boeing to conduct extensive testing and analysis.
