Protecting yourself from illness in the work place

Posted: Updated:

Tyler, TX (KYTX) -- This is Spring Break for many families, which is not a good time to be sick.

However, both ETMC and NET Health report more people coming in with upper respiratory problems. It's something offices like East Texas Vascular Associates want to watch out for.

"Patients are constantly coming in sick, I don't need the employees sick," Pam Moore, Office Manager at East Texas Vascular Associates, said.

Not only are surfaces being cleaned, but hands are as well. "In all of our exam rooms, we have the hand sanitizers which they are welcome to use, along with our staff," Moore said.

Office managers also say not to forget about wiping down your telephones. You use these a lot, so it's important to do it everyday.

"The way we work today is not by yourself, you work with a team," Russell Hopkins, Director for Public Health Emergency Preparedness, said.

He says usually this last surge during the flu season hits in late March, but the peak came earlier this year. Even he's been to the hospital recently with a family member.

"There were no beds, we waited 45 minutes on an ambulance stretcher to get into an ER bed," Hopkins said.

He says the first thing is recognizing that you are ill, meaning those with symptoms should not try and go into work.
