Travel Agents: Carnival problems not slowing cruise bookings

Posted: Updated:

SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) - For the second time in a month Carnival Cruise passengers are stranded.

So, are East Texans worried about taking a cruise?

Carnival is scrambling to charter flights for those on board after the ship Dream became a nightmare.

According to several travel agents we spoke with today, it's not stopping people from booking cruises.

They say people still want to hit the water for a vacation, but they are asking more questions.

"The bathrooms are not working, they're backing up," says Carnival Dream passenger Gregg Stark.

Some passengers on the Carnival Cruise ship Dream say they're seeing the same problems Triumph had a month ago.

"The elevators have not been working. They've been turning them on and off. On and off," says Stark.

Carnival says a malfunction occurred during regular testing of the ship's emergency diesel generator, and only one public restroom was taken off-line.

But they are arranging flights to remove passengers from the ship stuck in the Caribbean.

"Things happen, and how it's handled after it happens is really what keeps them to bounce back," says travel agent Milton Wallace.

Wallace is a travel agent with Dreams Come True Travel in East Texas.

He says Carnival is his most popular cruise line and the news of two ships having problems is raising some eyebrows, but not causing a serious drop.

"I had one group to cancel because they were concerned about the ship," says Wallace.

He says he is getting more questions.

"How long has the ship been out, when was the last time it's been in to be refurbished or worked on?" says Wallace about the questions he's gotten.

Wallace says people should ask those questions about any cruise ship before they board, because it doesn't matter who owns it.

"I had so many people ragging on me saying you guys are going on carnival, you guys are going on carnival. I said what are the odds of it happening to two ships in such a short period of time," says Dream passenger Kris Anderson.

"Nothing is perfect," says Wallace.

Wallace says people love to take cruises, in fact there's one trip in particular they're knocking down doors to get onto.

He says Carnival has been doing it's best trying to right the wrongs in these situations.

Earlier this week Carnival announced a comprehensive review of all 23 of its ships.

A class action lawsuit was filed in court this week over the problems on board Carnival Triumph last month.
