Standoff ends peacefully after man allegedly takes girlfriend hostage with machete

Posted: Updated:

HOUSTON (KHOU) -- An overnight standoff lasted nearly seven hours before a man with a machete handed his girlfriend and then himself over to authorities, police said.

A Houston Police Department SWAT team was called to a northwest side apartment shortly before 1 a.m. Friday.

Family members at the complex, located on Deep Forest Circle at W. Tidwell Road, said an altercation broke out during a gathering. Everyone fled the apartment except for the suspect and his girlfriend.

Family members said the man had a machete and several knives in the apartment, and he refused to let his girlfriend leave. A cousin of the victim said family members were concerned because the couple has a history of domestic violence.

HPD officers set up a communication device to try and talk with the suspect for several hours.

Around 7 a.m. he let the woman go, but he stayed behind. After another 30 minutes, he finally turned himself over to authorities, and the standoff came to a peaceful end.

HPD said the man will now face kidnapping charges.
