'Wings of Freedom' lands in Tyler

Posted: Updated:
SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) -

Some of the country's historic military planes are in Tyler for the weekend and open for you to see. The wings of freedom tour landed at Tyler Pounds field Friday afternoon.

This year's displays include a B-17, a B-24, a P-51 fighter and a Huey Helicopter. For the first time they've added the original German jet fighter, the Messerschmitt Me-262, which out-ran propeller planes during World War II.

"Thank goodness the Germans didn't get this operational with a high number of bombers or it would have been a disaster for a lot of our airmen," Retired U.S. Air Force Second Lieutenant Loyd George said.

To hear more about George's real-life encounter with a Me-262 during World War II, watch the video above.

Admission to the wings of freedom tour is $15 for adults and $8 for kids at Tyler's aviation museum. It's open Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 5.
