Spring cleaning to make and save money

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - East Texas consignment stores want you to keep them in mind when you're Spring cleaning this year.

It's a win-win situation for the stores that need merchandise and people who need more room in their closets for all the new Spring and Summer trends. You can even get cash on the spot at most consignment stores.

Laura Murdoch says Spring cleaning is a great way to make easy money.

"Trying to get some money for what we're getting rid of."

Her family stayed busy cleaning out their closets during Spring Break.

Out with the old and in with the new...

She says getting a little extra cash in the process was a bonus because in today's volatile economy, she'll take whatever she can get.

"Even if it's just a little bit, it's better than nothing."

"We always need people to come in and sell to us."

Lisa Snow is store manager. she says the amount of money you get in return for your clothing depends on three things.

"We price based on brand, style and condition."

"Right now, consignment stores are really looking for your Spring and Summer items. But, they say they'll take clothes from any season. So, that means if you need to get rid of some Winter clothing, like Winter coats and sweaters you're not going to be wearing anymore, they'll take those too."

"We also need men's and women's shoes and accessories."

Yuvonne Irby trades in her clothes for cash, but she says saving money by shopping at consignment stores is even better.

"Shorts.. It's getting Summer weather, so yep."

She says it beats buying a whole new spring closet at full price.

"Like on these right here, anything from $6-$8 is what I'm paying for these. So, if I bought them anywhere else, they'd be over $20-$25."

And Irby says she'd rather get more bang for her buck at consignment shops any day.

If you have clothes you'd like to bring in, put them in a bag or box and workers will figure out a price for you. You don't have to accept the offer, so you can always take them back home with you if you change your mind.
