Health Alert: One in three seniors die with Alzheimer's

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - A new report reveals one in three seniors in the US dies with Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia. From 2000 to 2010, Alzheimer's deaths rose 68 percent. Doctors say the increase is putting an enormous burden on the health care system and the estimated15 million Alzheimer caregivers. There is no cure and no way to stop the progression of the disease.

(CBS) - There is new evidence that the use of low fat or skim milk does not reduce weight gain for toddlers. Researchers at the University of Virginia asked parents of 11,000 children about their milk use. They found the average weight of kids who drank regular and two percent milk was lower than kids who drank low fat or skim milk. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children drink low fat milk after the age of two to reduce saturated fat intake and prevent excess weight gain.

(CBS) - People who maintain a heart-healthy lifestyle are also getting another benefit. Researchers at the American Heart Association say people who follow their simple seven steps to prevent heart disease can reduce their risk of cancer up to 51 percent. The steps include: being physically active, eating healthy foods, maintaining healthy cholesterol and not smoking.
