Daughter of Gregg J.P. says she will hold police, county, health providers accountable

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Debbie Drayden is the daughter of Sam and Ina Lawson. She flew home yesterday to Atlanta, Ga., but is returning to East Texas on Thursday for two reasons.

One, is to put heat on Longview police, Gregg County, Good Shepherd Medical Center and Longview Behavioral Health. Drayden says she warned all of them that her mother suffered from paranoia, and that she kept a loaded gun in the house.

She says she tried to have her mother committed, but no one would listen. Drayden's mother, Ina Lawson, is accused of shooting Drayden's father, Sam Lawson.

"I went to the hospital. I went to the PD. I went to Longview Behavioral Health and asked, 'would you please help my mom? She's a threat to others and herself,'" Drayden said.

Drayden says she knew it was only a matter of time before her mother shot someone.

She plans a protest at Longview city hall, the police station, the Gregg County Courthouse and both health centers. She says taxpayers should have a way to get help when they have a relative who might be a danger to themselves or others.

"We need support," Drayden said. "We don't need to be turned away."

Drayden says her father's health is improving, and plans to check him into a rehab clinic in Dallas this week.

"My mom is in a treatment facility, and she's finally getting the treatment which she needs to deal with her mental illness," she said.

Gregg County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace B. H. James on says he and other justices are handling the workload in Judge Lawson's absence.
