Azleway boys build auction items to raise money

TYLER (KYTX) -The annual Big Ranch Round-Up at the Azleway Boys Ranch in Tyler is happening in just a few days.

The event raises money for more than 1,300 children who are in need of help.

In the welding shop at the Azleway Boys Ranch, you'll find three young men working hard, building some very unique items.

17-year-old Justin Armstrong built a trailer. He also built a sprayer that was made by special request.

Justin and other boys at Azleway have built horseshoe art and other crafts to raise money for the 34-year-old organization that helps children in crisis.

"It makes me feel really good, selling this stuff, making a profit, getting some money to put away for the kids," said Justin Armstrong.

Azleway provides foster care and adoption services, along with substance abuse programs.

"We need to help these children while we have the opportunity, if we can help them now, we can change the course of a lifetime," said Kim Beckham.

Kim Beckham with development at Azleway saud these projects teach the boys a life-long skill. Something they can take out into the real world and build a career.

"It kind of teaches you how to think, you have to use a lot of math, how to space stuff, where to cut stuff," explained Armstrong.

While Azleway receives funds through the state to help children in need, they can still use a lot of help.

"What most people don't understand is there is a $7.50 a day deficit between what the state provides us and what it takes us to provide for these children," said Beckham.

Money that is needed to put the children on track to live a happy and successful life.
